Police have arrested two men for allegedly performing black magic rituals at a crematorium in Maharashtra’s Thane district, officials said on Monday.
The incident came to light when a police ‘patil’ discovered two photographs of unidentified women pasted onto a lemon wrapped in black cloth, placed at the crematorium grounds in Pimplasgaon village in Bhiwandi, reported news agency PTI.
Following an inquiry, the police patil identified two men, Kabir Dileep Chowdhary (29) and Nikhil Santosh Patil (23), as the alleged perpetrators who indulged in the 'black magic' activities at the site between June 29 and July 4, Kongaon police station's sub-inspector Rohan Gaikwad said.
The two men were arrested on Saturday and booked under the Maharashtra Prevention and Eradication of Human Sacrifice and other Inhuman, Evil and Aghori Practices and Black Magic Act, the official said, reported news agency PTI.
The police were working to identify the two women who were seemingly targeted by the accused and probing the motive behind the act.
Traditionally, police patils are responsible for maintaining peace and order within their village, assisting the police in investigations, and serving as a liaison between the administration and the villagers.
Unidentified girl found dead in Thane; police suspect murder
In another case in Maharashtra's Thane city, an unidentified minor girl was found dead near a construction site, police said on Sunday. A case of murder has been registered, and an investigation is underway, reported PTI.
According to an officer from the police control room, the girl was found on Saturday afternoon near a road in front of a construction site in the Kasarvadavali area. She had a hood tightly wrapped around her neck, prompting police to suspect foul play behind the death.
The girl is believed to be between 15 and 17 years old, approximately four feet tall, and was wearing a green salwar-kurta with bangles on her wrists, the officer said, according to PTI.
Her body has been sent for post-mortem examination, and photographs have been circulated among law enforcement agencies to assist with identification.
The Kasarvadavali police have registered a case under sections 103(1) (murder) and 238 (destruction of evidence) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, an officer said.
