The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) on Thursday issued an urgent notice informing citizens of a temporary disruption in water supply following a leakage in the main pipeline supplying water from Morbe Dam.

According to civic officials, the 2050 mm diameter main water pipeline developed a leak near the Bhokarpada Water Treatment Plant. As a precautionary measure, water supply from the treatment plant to the NMMC area has been shut down with immediate effect to facilitate repair work.

Officials said the repair work is being carried out on a war footing and is expected to take a minimum of around 4.30 hours. During this period, the machinery at the Bhokarpada Water Treatment Plant will remain shut between 11.30 am and 4.00 pm.

As a result, the evening water supply today in the NMMC area, as well as in the CIDCO-administered areas of Kharghar and Kamothe, will be supplied at low pressure and in reduced quantity. However, civic authorities have assured that the morning water supply on Thursday will resume as per the regular schedule.

Citizens have been requested to take note of the temporary disruption, use water judiciously, and cooperate with the civic administration during the repair period.

CIDCO achieves first-ever water tunnel breakthrough at Hetawane water supply project

Meanwhile, the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) has achieved a major milestone with the first tunnel breakthrough in its history during the Hetawane water supply project in Navi Mumbai, an official statement said.

The breakthrough was achieved at Shaft-4 in Wahal village under Package-1, which is being executed by Afcons Infrastructure Ltd. This marks the first time CIDCO has recorded a tunnel breakthrough across all its projects.

The breakthrough took place in CIDCO’s Water Tunnel Package-1, which includes an 8.7-kilometre treated water tunnel. Of this, 5.52 kilometres of tunnelling work has already been completed, the statement said.

Krishnamurthy Subramanian, Executive Chairman of Afcons Infrastructure, congratulated the project team and CIDCO for achieving the milestone.

Subramanian said that despite geological and logistical challenges, the team adopted innovative methods and set national tunnelling records. He added that Afcons would complete the project six months ahead of schedule, while maintaining high standards of safety and quality, it said.
