Bharti Shinde was arrested on Friday by the Oshiwara police from a posh locality of Lokhandwala for robbing cash and jewellery worth Rs 2 lakh.
Her modus operandi has been to pose as a domestic help and flee with valuables. She is already booked by the Dindoshi and Samta Nagar police in similar offences of theft.
On Friday morning, when the female constable who was keeping an eye on her at Oshiwara police station, went to the washroom, Shinde sneaked out of the room. The fact that the police sub-inspector on duty was also not present made her job easy.
"Shinde found that the women who cleaned the police station was away and had kept her phone on charge. Seeing nobody was around, she fled with the phone of the janitor," said DCP Dhananjay Kulkarni of the Mumbai Crime Branch.
She was once again booked for theft and obstructing a government worker from duty. The police have launched a manhunt for Shinde, who is a resident of Nallasapora and a record criminal. "There are three to four cases already registered against her. We request citizens to verify credentials of people they hire at the local police station to avoid such instances," said Kulkarni.
