Say Pune police to woman who was allegedly sexually exploited and dumped by her boyfriend as she was dark
Manali (identity withheld on request), a 27-year-old resident of Dhayri was running from pillar to post to lodge a complaint against her former boyfriend who sexually exploited her after promising marriage and later estranged
her. At first, she was reluctant to complain against him as she received calls threatening to kill her grandmother and her if she approached the police.
But when Manali finally decided to lodge a complaint against her boyfriend, the police instead of acting on it, decided to play mediator. They repeatedly advised her that registering an offence would only damage her reputation and bring further shame. According to Manali, the Haveli police station accepted her application on February 28, but did not register an FIR.
It was only after intervention from the SP that the police registered a complaint against Chinmay Mohan Jog, a resident of Beturkarpada, Kalyan (west).u00a0
PI Satish Patil told MiD DAY, "We have booked him under various sections of IPC including 376, 420 on rape and cheating charges, and the investigation is on."
Said Manali, "He dumped me after sharing an intimate relationship with me. Am I a doll with no emotions?"
Manali 'met' Jog through Orkut while she was working as an administrative executive in an IT firm last January.
She said, "When Jog shifted to Pune in search of a job, we became friends and soon got intimate with each other. The relationship lasted for a year. He promised to marry but after his parents refused to accept me because of my dark complexion, he cut all ties with me."
Manali could not cope with the heartbreak and ended up losing her well-paid job. She lives with her grandmother.u00a0u00a0
Advocate Supriya Kothari of Bhagini helpline reacted sharply to the lackadaisical approach of the police.
"It's almost as if the police raped her. I think it's disgusting," she said.u00a0u00a0u00a0u00a0
