Just a few days after the horrific Ahmedabad plane crash, a flight bound for Vienna from Delhi plunged 900 feet just after takeoff. This incident has been seriously considered by the authorities; reportedly, both pilots have been grounded.
As per the spokesperson for the airline while addressing the incident, “Both the pilots who were on board have been grounded till further orders by the investigation agencies.”
Flight AI-187 reportedly took off from Delhi's Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport at around 2.56 am on June 14. The Boeing 777 aircraft plunged just after the takeoff, but it eventually landed safely in Vienna. The flight took around nine hours to reach Vienna from Delhi.
The reports state that "Soon after takeoff, the aircraft abruptly lost altitude, triggering stall and ground proximity warnings, including repeated 'Don't sink' alerts.”
In view of passenger safety, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), which serves as the aviation regulator in the country, has directed a detailed probe into the matter. DGCA has also asked Air India’s head of safety to ensure what exactly the issue was and what actions will be taken by the airlines to counter these kinds of problems in the future.
The Air India officials, while addressing the issues, said that “the aircraft was involved in an in-flight occurrence of stick shaker and GPWS caution. Soon after takeoff, a stick shaker warning and GPWS don’t sink caution appeared. A stall warning came once and a GPWS caution came twice. There was an altitude loss of around 900 feet during the climb. Subsequently, the crew recovered the aircraft and continued the flight to Vienna.”
Adding to it, the official further highlights that the pilots who were on board acted very smartly to counter the situation and carried on with their journey before landing in Vienna.
Earlier, on June 12, 2025, an Air India plane en route from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick crashed just a few seconds after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, Ahmedabad. The plane crashed in a residential area at Ahmedabad’s BJ Medical College hospital. The horrifying plane crash in Ahmedabad claimed around 260 lives.
