The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Monday said that seizures related to Bihar Election 2025 and by-polls have crossed Rs 100 crore, with enforcement teams stepping up action against illicit inducements across the state.
According to a press note issued by the poll body, illegal items worth Rs 108.19 crore have been seized as on Monday. These include cash worth Rs 9.62 crore, 9.6 lakh litres of liquor worth Rs 42.14 crore, drugs valuing Rs 24.61 crore, precious metals worth Rs 5.8 crore, and other freebies which value more than Rs 26 crore.
The commission said that 824 flying squads have been deployed across Bihar to ensure prompt action on complaints received through the C-Vigil app, with a response time target of 100 minutes.
The poll body has directed all enforcement authorities to maintain strict vigilance on the movement of cash, liquor, drugs, and other inducements during the election period. At the same time, it cautioned officials to ensure that ordinary citizens are not harassed or inconvenienced during inspections.
Citizens and political parties can report violations of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) through the C-Vigil app on the poll body’s platform ECINET or by contacting the 24X7 complaint-monitoring system via the toll-free number 1950, where complaints can be lodged with the district election or returning officers concerned.
The commission reiterated its commitment to conducting free, fair, and inducement-free elections in Bihar and the eight Assembly constituencies where by-elections are also scheduled.
Liquor shops near Bihar border in Uttar Pradesh’s Deoria to remain closed from tomorrow
In view of the first phase of the Bihar Election 2025, set to take place on Thursday, November 6, liquor shops located within a three-kilometre radius of the Bihar border in Uttar Pradesh’s Deoria district will remain closed, news agency PTI reported, quoting officials.
The directive was issued by District Magistrate Divya Mittal in compliance with a communication from the excise department in Lucknow to ensure peaceful and fair polling, an official spokesperson said.
According to the order, all country liquor, composite, foreign liquor, and toddy retail shops within the specified area will remain shut from 6 pm on Tuesday, November 4, to 6 pm on Thursday, November 6, PTI reported.
The spokesperson added that shops in the same zone will also remain closed from 6 am on November 14, the vote-counting day, until the completion of the counting process.
The district magistrate warned that strict action under the Excise Act will be taken against any liquor shop found operating during the prohibition period.
No compensation or relaxation will be granted to licence holders for the closure days, PTI reported.
The second phase of Bihar Election 2025 will be held on November 11.
