With the launch of Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Voter Adhikar Yatra’ here, the Congress on Sunday said it is not just another political march but a moral and constitutional crusade to “safeguard democracy, protect the sanctity of ‘one person-one vote’, and ensure that the voices of the most marginalised are not stolen by fraud”. The Yatra started from poll-bound Bihar’s Sasaram and saw the participation of Rahul Gandhi, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, RJD chief Lalu Prasad, Leader of Opposition in Bihar Assembly Tejashwi Yadav, and other opposition leaders.

In a post on X, the Congress general secretary in-charge Communications, Jairam Ramesh, said, “This Yatra arises in the context of the BJP’s ploy to disenfranchise lakhs of voters in Bihar through the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls and the shocking revelations of ‘vote chori’ happening across the country.”  Over the next 16 days, the Yatra will cover 20+ districts and 1300 kilometers before culminating in a massive Voter Adhikar Rally at Patna’s historic Gandhi Maidan on September 1 .

‘Will not let them steal polls’

Rahul Gandhi on Sunday said the whole country now knows that the Election Commission is “stealing” elections in collusion with the BJP and asserted that the INDIA bloc will not let them succeed in their “conspiracy” to steal Bihar Assembly polls by voter additions and deletions through the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.

Addressing the gathering here, Gandhi said while he was asked to submit an affidavit after his press conference exposing “vote chori”, no such demand was made from BJP leaders who made claims in their presser.

“In the whole country, Assembly and Lok Sabha elections are being stolen and their last conspiracy is to delete and add voters through SIR to steal the elections in Bihar,” Gandhi charged. “We will not let them steal the election in Bihar. People of Bihar will not let them steal elections. Poor only have the power of vote and will not let them steal polls,” the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha said. He said the whole country now knows what the EC is doing and how it is carrying out this “theft”.  Gandhi asserted that it is a fight to save the Constitution.

‘Constitution under threat’

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Sunday charged the Election Commission with acting like an “agent” of the “dangerous” Narendra Modi-led government at the Centre, which posed a “threat” to the Constitution and the people’s right to vote.
