On Monday, an elderly woman identified as Zaibunissa Abdul Sattar Laakha was killed and six persons were injured when a portion of a four-storey building caved in, apparently due to rain, in Mahim.u00a0 According to BMC, the debris removal operations are still on at the collapse site of &#39;Altaf&#39;, located on Cadell Road. The injured were admitted to Bhabha Hospital in suburban Bandra, KEM and at Sion Hospital among others.The building was nearly 30 years old. Sanjay Dutt&rsquo;s lawyer Rizwan Merchant owned a house in the building. When contacted Merchant confirmed that his wife and mother were trapped in the rubble. The MHADA and BMC have claimed the private building did not fall in any list of dilapidated buildings. The structure housed 16 flats, with a showroom on the ground floor. Initially three people were rushed to Bhabha hospital, of whom one was declared dead on arrival. Another person, Shankar Soir, is still at Bhabha Hospital and another injured Farhana Lakha (35) has been shifted to Holy Family Hospital. The deceased was identified as Zaibunnisa Lakha (76) and her family members are missing. An injured person taken to KEM Hospital was identified as Sunil S Mishra, a security guard at a car showroom. One other injured was taken to Sion Hospital and another to Hinduja Hospital. <img alt="" src="http://images.mid-day.com/2013/jun/Mahim-building.jpg" style="width: 500px; height: 331px;" /> A rescue team rushed to the site of a five-storey building, Altaf Mansion, that collapsed at Cadell Road in Mahim, yesterday. Pic/Shadab Khan Fire brigade officers said that children were also feared trapped inside the building. Fire officials said the society has two wings and one of them collapsed at 8 pm. The other wing and some nearby buildings have been evacuated as a precautionary step. Officials could not confirm how many people were trapped and said eight fire engines had been rushed to the spot. Rescue work was affected as torrential rains worsened the situation. Locals claim that certain structural changes were made by some residents, which may have resulted in the collapse of the building. Some of them said that there was an overload of hoardings and metal structures on the terrace of the building. (With inputs from agencies)
