A Delhi court on Monday sent Gaganpreet Kaur (38), the woman accused of driving the BMW involved in a crash that killed a senior Finance Ministry official and left his wife injured, to two-day judicial custody. The accident occurred near Dhaula Kuan in southwest Delhi on Sunday.

Duty Magistrate Akanksha Singh remanded Kaur after she was produced before the court from her residence. Her counsel, senior advocate Vikas Pahwa, said custodial interrogation was not required.

The court also issued notices to Delhi Police and the victims’ family on Kaur’s bail application and directed them to file their replies by Monday, when the matter will next be heard.

Kaur was arrested on charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder and other offences after being discharged from hospital.

The Gurugram couple was admitted to hospital for treatment following the accident. After Gaganpreet Kaur was discharged, she was taken into custody for further questioning and legal proceedings before being formally arrested.

Police have registered a case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, citing sections 281 (rash driving or riding on a public way), 125B (acts endangering life or personal safety of others), 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 238 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence, or giving false information to screen offender).

The FIR also raised questions over the handling of the aftermath, with allegations that Kaur took the victims, Navjot Singh and his wife Sandeep Kaur, to a healthcare facility over 19 kilometres from the accident site, instead of a nearby hospital. The victims’ family claimed that Gaganpreet and her husband were treated first despite their injuries.

Deputy Secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs, Navjot Singh (52), a resident of Hari Nagar, was killed in the accident on the Ring Road near Delhi Cantonment Metro station. His wife sustained serious injuries. The couple was returning home after visiting the Bangla Sahib Gurdwara.

The luxury BMW and the two-wheeler involved in the collision have been seized, and forensic examination of the accident site has been conducted, police said.

BMW crash puts spotlight on Delhi’s road safety record

The death of a senior Finance Ministry official in a car crash has once again highlighted Delhi’s persistently high number of fatal accidents involving two-wheelers, with official data showing the city continues to lose nearly four lives on its roads every day.

Deputy Secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs, Navjot Singh, 52, a resident of Hari Nagar, was killed in the accident on the Ring Road near the Delhi Cantonment Metro station on Sunday afternoon. His wife sustained serious injuries. The couple was returning home after visiting the Bangla Sahib Gurdwara.

Gaganpreet Kaur, 38, the woman allegedly driving the BMW involved in the crash, was arrested on charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder and other offences on Monday after being discharged from hospital.

Delhi Traffic Police data for 2024 show that 2,325 accidents involving two-wheelers were recorded in the city. Of these, 1,737 were categorised as ‘simple’, while 588 were ‘fatal’. The crashes left 2,234 people injured and 611 dead. Fatal accidents accounted for 25.29 per cent of the total, underscoring the serious risks faced by bikers and scooter riders who make up a large portion of Delhi’s traffic.

Between January 1 and April 15 this year, 669 two-wheeler accidents were reported, including 136 fatal crashes and 533 simple accidents, resulting in 696 injuries and 141 deaths in just 15 weeks.

From January to May 2025, Delhi Police recorded 2,235 road accidents across all categories, which led to 577 fatalities and 2,187 injuries.
