From next month, the State Family Welfare Department will be starting a month-long drive to check 8,834 registered sonography centres and clinics &mdash; both active and inactive &ndash; all over the state. <img alt="" src="http://images.mid-day.com/2013/may/08B03903.jpg" style="width: 500px; height: 354px;" /> UNDER SCRUTINY: The department has also formed a vigilance squad to keep a tab on all sonography centres in the state. Representation Pic &ldquo;Normally, a centre is checked once in three months so there are chances of malpractice. But now we have ordered all authorities to actively take part in the drive,&rdquo; said Sudhakar Kokane, deputy director, State Family Welfare Department. The meeting was held recently and all the authorities were informed by video conferencing. Letters were also sent to all civic bodies. All authorities have been informed and have made plans accordingly. &ldquo;All civil surgeons, medical health officers and concerned authorities have been informed of the action plan. All procedures are the same. They were revised in the conference so that no point was missed while carrying out the drive,&rdquo; added Kokane. There are around 6,529 active sonography centres out of the registered 8,834. The rest are inactive or closed. &ldquo;There are chances of closed centres having carried out sonographies. We will be looking into that as well,&rdquo; Kokane said. &ldquo;The state department has also formed a vigilance squad to keep a tab on all centres in the state. We had formed a squad a year ago that keeps a check on all centres and authorities,&rdquo; informed Dr Asaram Khade, consultant of the state Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) cell.u00a0

Out of 8,834 centres registered with family welfare department,   over 6,500 are active; the rest are either inactive or closed; officials say sonographies may have been conducted at these centres
