If you were hoping to be driving on easy street in 2013 then it&rsquo;s time to gear down. Starting January 1, the government has decided to hike various fees applicable for motorists at Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) across the state. <img alt="" src="http://images.mid-day.com/2012/dec/Driving_1.jpg" style="width: 500px; height: 339px;" /> Representation pic The upturn is for temporary registration numbers and advertisements displayed on cabs, rickshaws and commercial vehicles apart from appeals and documents pertaining to RTOs. According to a notification issued by the state transport department recently, a duplicate driving licence, for instance, will cost Rs 200 instead of the present Rs 100. The fee for laminating the licence will go up to Rs 100 from Rs 50 charged now. Charges for temporary registration of vehicles too will increase &mdash; it will be Rs 100 for two-wheelers, Rs 200 for light motor vehicles, Rs 300 for medium goods vehicles and medium passenger vehicles, and Rs 500 for heavy goods and passenger vehicles. Apart from increased fees for various types of applications at RTOs, drivers of public service vehicles will also have to shell out double the amount currently charged for new metal badges and duplicate badges, ie Rs 200 and Rs 100 respectively. Conductor badges, used by BEST and MSRTC employees, will be available for Rs 300 instead of the present Rs 100. Applications for display of advertisements on goods carriages and omnibuses will cost Rs 2,000, escalating from Rs 200. The rate will be Rs 1,000 instead of Rs 100 for motor cabs, and Rs 500 for auto rickshaws &mdash; up from Rs 60 at present. You will also have to spend more to get your hands on copies of documents required to challenge decisions of officials at RTOs. An appellant will have to pay Rs 20 for the first copy of the document and Rs 5 for every subsequent copy, as opposed to Rs 15 and Rs 3 charged at present. According to a senior government official, the state expects to generate Rs 25 crore more next year with these augmented rates. &ldquo;The proposal was moved by the state transport commissioner and we have approved it,&rdquo; he said.
