Now get traffic updates from Millennium City on the social networking website

Taking a cue from their Delhi and Noida counterparts, Gurgaon police has launched its page on the social networking website Facebook.

The account was created on Thursday. On the special page Gurgaon traffic police has shared some useful notes/data, traffic rules, road marking, speed limit and related information titled 'Gurgaon Traffic Police'.
"Gurgaon Traffic Police Welcomes You to it's Facebook Page. Let's Make a New Beginning Together," Gurgaon Commissioner of Police SS Deswal said in the opening comment.

While the aim seems to have been to set up an interactive communication channel with citizens, image building for the ongoing Commonwealth Games, is clearly an objective too.

"We have launched this page to know the views of the public and establish a free flow of communication with the residents of Gurgaon," Deswal said. The contact numbers of various police officials have been uploaded on the page and it also allows Gurgaon road users to request police presence in certain areas, lodge complaints, and ask questions.

During the first day of the service, few residents have expressed appreciation for the work of the traffic police.
"Gurgaon traffic police has done a commendable thing by getting onto FACEBOOK ... though late but better than NEVER," said Yogesh Kumar.

Gurgaon Traffic Police officers will update the page on hourly basis with messages regarding traffic jams and road safety.

"This will enormously benefit the general public and they would be able to explore alternative routes to reach their destination. We have also launched an SMS service through which residents can get traffic updates on their phone," Deswal added.

Like a service launched by the Noida and Delhi police, commuters can also post pictures of traffic violations on the Gurgaon police page.
