A dilute hydrochloric acid leak was reported on Monday evening from a storage tank at a chemical plant located in the MIDC Tarapur industrial area in Palghar district, news agency PTI reported. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported, a civic official stated.

The incident occurred around 7 pm at the premises of Aarti Drugs Limited, according to Yasin Tadvi, Chief of the Disaster Management Cell, Thane Municipal Corporation.

"A storage tank containing diluted hydrochloric acid reportedly cracked, releasing dense fumes. It caused panic in the neighbouring areas of Salwad and Shivajinagar. Eye and throat irritation was felt by people and workers. Fire brigade teams from Boisar rushed to the site immediately after the alarm was raised. Now the situation is under control," he said, according to news agency PTI.

"Necessary containment measures have been taken. There is no report of injuries due to leakage so far. Personnel from Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) and police are at the site to oversee further safety checks. Authorities are monitoring the situation and assessing whether further evacuation or medical support is necessary," added Tadvi.

Three containers wash ashore in Palghar, one carries oil-like substance

Palghar district witnessed a tense situation on the morning of September 7 after three containers washed ashore near Shirgaon-Usbhav and Satpati Dandipada villages under Satpati Police Station limits.

According to police, around 9 am, local fishermen spotted the containers drifting due to high tides and immediately alerted Satpati Police.

A police team rushed to the spot and informed the customs department, coast guard, Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB), forest department, and other authorities concerned, who were called in for joint action.

Upon inspection, one of the containers was found to contain an oil-like substance, posing a potential threat to marine life in case of a leak.

Considering the tidal conditions, police, with the help of a crane, safely shifted one container to shore, while efforts are ongoing to retrieve the remaining two vessels.

Palghar Superintendent of Police, IPS Yatish Deshmukh, visited the site and directed further operations. The action is being led by Satpati Police Station in-charge, Inspector Uddhav Surve, in coordination from multiple departments.
