India last Friday criticised China’s infrastructure development projects in the Shaksgam Valley, saying it reserves the right to take necessary measures to safeguard its interests as it is an Indian territory

India on Tuesday once again rejected China’s claim over the Shaksgam Valley in Kashmir while also rejecting the so-called China-Pakistan ‘boundary agreement’ signed in 1963. “Shaksgam Valley is Indian territory. We have never recognised the so-called China-Pakistan ‘boundary agreement’ signed in 1963. We have consistently maintained that the agreement is illegal and invalid,” External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said on Tuesday.
India last Friday criticised China’s infrastructure development projects in the Shaksgam Valley, saying it reserves the right to take necessary measures to safeguard its interests as it is an Indian territory. Pakistan illegally ceded 5180 sq km of Indian territory in the Shaksgam Valley to China in 1963 from areas illegally occupied by it, the MEA said.
China reaffirmed its territorial claims over the Shaksgam Valley, stressing that the Chinese infrastructure projects in the area are “beyond reproach”. Reacting to Jaiswal’s comments, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning told a media briefing in Beijing that “first of all, the territory you mentioned is part of China’s territory”. “China’s infrastructure activities in its own territory are beyond reproach,” she said.

Mao said China and Pakistan have signed a border agreement and determined the border between the two countries since the 1960s. These are the rights of Pakistan and China as sovereign states, she said. Army chief Upendra Dwivedi on Tuesday also reiterated India’s stand on Shaksgam Valley, saying that it considers the 1963 agreement between Pakistan and China “illegal”.
“As far as the Shaksgam Valley is concerned, India considers the 1963 agreement between Pakistan and China as illegal. Therefore, we don't approve any activity in the valley,” the army chief stated.
Entire PoK belongs to India: Ladakh LG
Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Kavinder Gupta on Tuesday strongly rejected China’s claim, asserting that the entire region of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) belongs to India. He also asserted that no expansionist attempt would be tolerated. Gupta said that no such act would be tolerated and China must realise India today is far stronger than it was in the past.
He added that China had earlier laid claims on parts of Arunachal Pradesh as well. “The whole of [Pakistan-occupied] Kashmir is ours. We do not know what Pakistan has traded. China should understand that nothing will be achieved through its expansionist policy. India is capable. It is not the India of 1962, it is the India of 2026. Any such attempts will be foiled,” he told reporters here.
