Three Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were killed while 15 others sustained injuries after their vehicle skidded off the road and rolled down into a nullah in Jammu and Kashmir's Udhampur district on Thursday, reported news agency PTI.
The mishap took place around 10:30 am in the Kadwa area when the CRPF personnel were returning in a bunker vehicle following an operation from Basant Garh.
The vehicle, belonging to the 187 battalion of the force, was carrying 23 personnel. While two personnel died on the spot, 16 others were injured.
They were rushed to a hospital, where one more personnel died, taking the toll to three.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Union Minister Jitendra Singh expressed grief over the loss of lives, and directed officials to ensure best possible care and assistance to the injured personnel.
Condoling the deaths, Sinha in a post on X wrote, "We will never forget their exemplary service to the nation. My thoughts are with bereaved families. Praying for speedy recovery of injured. Directed senior officials to ensure best possible care & assistance.”
Singh also mourned the loss of lives, and noted that "The vehicle was carrying several brave jawans of the CRPF".
He said he has spoken to Deputy Commissioner Saloni Rai, who is personally monitoring the situation, and highlighted that locals came forward to help the injured jawans.
Sharing an X post, he wrote, "Udhampur: Disturbing to receive the news of a road accident involving a CRPF vehicle in the Kandva-Basantgarh area. The vehicle was carrying several brave jawans of the CRPF. I have just now spoken to DC Ms Saloni Rai, who is personally monitoring the situation and keeping me updated."
"Rescue measures have been initiated immediately. Locals have voluntarily come forward to assist. All possible help being ensured", he added.
Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also condoled the loss of life, reported news agency ANI.
"The news of the martyrdom of CRPF jawans and several others being injured due to our army's vehicle falling into a deep ravine in Udhampur, Jammu-Kashmir is extremely distressing. May God grant peace to the departed souls. My deepest condolences to the grief-stricken families. The nation will always remain indebted to our brave jawans and their families. I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured jawans," she stated.
