Lok Sabha proceedings were adjourned for the second time on Thursday till 2 pm as Opposition parties continued raising slogans demanding a discussion on the voter list revision in Bihar and other key matters, reported PTI.
As the House met again at noon, Opposition members trooped into the well and demanded the rollback of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise in Bihar.
Sandhya Ray, who was chairing the Lok Sabha proceedings, proceeded with the scheduled laying of papers by various ministers and Members of Parliament despite the ruckus in the background.
Amid the loud protests, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman introduced a bill to amend the Manipur GST Act, 2017, as listed on the day's agenda, reported PTI.
While the disruptions persisted, Ray urged Opposition members to allow the House to conduct its business, noting that young parliamentarians look up to senior leaders as role models.
However, unable to restore order, she announced the adjournment of the session till 2 pm following continued commotion from the Opposition benches.
Earlier in the day, at 11 am, when the House first met, Opposition MPs, including members from the Congress party, began raising slogans and held placards calling for a debate on the SIR exercise.
In an attempt to carry the proceedings forward, Speaker Om Birla began the Question Hour, allowing questions on topics related to the government’s Smart City Mission programme.
"You have been systematically disrupting the proceedings of the House by flouting all democratic rules and regulations. People of the country, who have elected you, are watching you," he said, according to PTI.
Birla added that he was open to considering requests for discussions if they were submitted according to the rules and procedures of the House.
"This is not the way. You just don't want the House to function," he said and adjourned the proceedings till noon.
The Opposition continued to press for a debate on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) being conducted by the Election Commission in Bihar ahead of the Assembly polls in the state, reported PTI.
Besides limited discussions on Operation Sindoor in both Houses of the Parliament, Monsoon Session 2025 has seen minimal legislative activity due to frequent adjournments since it commenced on July 21.
