The incident took place just a week after Minister of State for Home Ramesh Bagwe visited the prison and warned jail authorities not to treat prisoners as if they were staying at home. But Balasaheb Gajabhau Pawar (40), a lifer hailing from Ahemdnagar district lodged in Yerawada, still felt enough at home to make his ladder at the workshop in the prison without anybody noticing and using it to make a break for it. And Pawar's ability to do get what he wanted would even put to shame the hardened criminals at Mumbai's Arthur Road jail, who Bagwe had said were leading a life of luxury. After all, Bagwe's ladder was a much biggeru00a0-- and usefulu00a0-- contraption than the spoon reportedly used as a weapon by Arthur Road inmates Abu Salem and Mustafa Dosa in their recent scuffle. According to sources, Pawar was lodged in Barrack No. 3 with 61 prisoners. Pawar is believed to have cut the bar fitted to Barrack No. 3 and managed to slip through a hole in the wall outside the barrack. He then climbed over a wall fencing the jail hospital and, finally, crossed the 15-feet-high fencing wall with the help of his ladder.
