Latur city in Maharashtra has witnessed an extraordinary 469 mm rainfall so far in the month of May, which is highly unusual for this time of the year, say experts, reported the PTI.
On Tuesday, the city received 125 mm of rainfall within three hours, the highest in the last 25 years, said Dr Babasaheb Thombre, dean of the government-run College of Agriculture in Latur where they regularly measure the seasonal downpour, according to the PTI.
Heavy rains caused water-logging in several parts of the city and inundated homes in multiple localities, disrupting daily life.
Tehsildar Saudagar Tandale on Wednesday said panchnamas (damage assessments) have been completed for 366 affected houses. "The remaining surveys will be conducted on Thursday," he added, as per the PTI.
Meanwhile, as many as sixteen persons have died in Maharashtra over the last five days due to rain-related incidents such as landslides, lightning, tree or structure collapse, according to a state government report, the news agency reported.
Maharashtra witnessed heavy rains from May 24 as the monsoon made its onset early this year.
Almost all regions of the state were affected due to Maharashtra rains.
Pune district recorded three deaths, followed by two each in Thane, Latur and Bhandara. One death each was recorded in Raigad, Ahilyanagar, Nagpur, Wardha, Chandrapur, Mumbai suburban and Gondia districts, the report said.
Besides, 18 persons were injured in the rain-related incidents since May 24, it said.
The report also said 41 animals died in the extreme weather incidents in the state.
Earlier, the Maharashtra government on Wednesday approved a proposal to procure equipment and machinery worth Rs 47.72 lakh to support relief and rescue operations, officials said, reported the PTI.
According to a Government Resolution (GR), this equipment is intended to boost the preparedness and response capabilities of agencies like the Indian Army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and the Maharashtra Fire Services, as per the PTI.
The funding is being provided under the capacity-building and preparedness programme, guided by recommendations of the 15th Finance Commission, said the GR issued by the Disaster Management, Relief and Rehabilitation Department.
