Two killed in lightning strike during rains in Maharashtra's Jalna

Two men were killed while another was seriously injured in a lightning strike in Jalna district of Maharashtra on Monday, officials said, reported the PTI.

In a similar incident, 17 domestic animals lost their lives in the Latur district.


The Marathwada region is witnessing spells of pre-monsoon showers accompanied by bolts from the sky.


The deceased men were identified as Sachin Bawaskar (30) and Ganesh Jadhav, both residents of Kautha Koli village, as per the PTI.

At 32.8 mm, the Marathwada region has recorded 256 per cent of the expected rainfall in six days so far this month.

The highest rainfall of 32.9 mm was recorded in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, an official said.

IMD forecasts light to moderate rain in city and surrounding areas

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday morning predicted light to moderate rain, with thundershowers in Mumbai and neighbouring districts on May 19.

Mumbai is expected to experience a cloudy sky with the possibility of a light rain on Monday, May 19. Temperatures will range from a cool 27 degrees Celsius in the morning to a warm 33 degrees Celsius during the day, the IMD stated.

According to weather department, Santacruz observatory in suburban Mumbai recorded a maximum temperature of 34.2 degrees Celsius and a minimum temperature of 26 degrees Celsius.

The IMD's data showed that the city observatory in Colaba recorded a maximum temperature of 33.5 degrees Celsius and a minimum temperature of 27.9 degrees Celsius.

The IMD predicted a "cloudy sky with possibility of thundershowers and light rain" for the city and its suburbs over the next 24 hours.

The pre-monsoon rains have been lashing the financial capital, with the weather department issuing a yellow alert until May 22 at the latest, barring today.

IMD has predicted moderate rain and thundershower alerts in Mumbai and Palghar districts of Maharashtra, while alerts have been issued for lightning, thunderstorms and moderate rain in Thane and Raigad.

For Mumbai and Palghar, IMD has forecasted thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, light to moderate rainfall, and gusty winds (40-50 kmph) at isolated places for the next four days.

Thunderstorms with lightning and heavy rain, gusting to 50-60 kilometres per hour, are likely at some places in Maharashtra today, including Kolhapur, Satara, Pune, Ahilyanagar, and Nashik in Maharashtra.
