The authorities in Beed district of Maharashtra have sacked the services of six contractual doctors working at government-run clinics for underprivileged people in district over habitual absenteeism and negligence in patient care, officials said on Wednesday, reported the PTI.
Launched two years ago, the Hinduhridaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Aapla Dawakhana scheme aims to provide affordable and accessible primary healthcare to urban labourers and low-income families who cannot visit hospitals during regular working hours.
The Aapla Dawakhana clinics operate from 2 pm to 10 pm and are staffed with medical officers, nurses, lab technicians, and attendants.
Officials said the dismissals followed numerous complaints from residents that doctors and staff at several centres were failing to report for duty. Their absence was depriving patients, especially daily wage earners and underprivileged citizens, of much-needed healthcare services, according to the PTI.
Acting on these complaints, Beed Zilla Parishad Chief Executive Officer Jitin Rahman instructed District Health Officer Dr Ulhas Gandal to carry out surprise inspections across various health centres in the city.
During these checks, six doctors attached to Aapla Dawakhana and Urban Health Extension Centres were found absent without prior notice, despite repeated warnings. Their contracts were terminated on Tuesday, a senior health department official stated, as per the PTI.
The officials said that the move was intended to maintain accountability and ensure uninterrupted medical services for the underprivileged.
Cop held in Satara doctor's death case sacked
Meanwhile, suspended sub-inspector Gopal Badane, an accused in the alleged suicide of a woman doctor in Maharashtra's Satara district, has been dismissed from service, officials said on Wednesday, reported the PTI.
Badane was arrested after the 28-year-old doctor was found dead in a hotel room in Phaltan town of the district on the night of October 23.
While police called it a death by suicide, the doctor left a note written on her palm, alleging that Badane had raped her multiple times.
In the same note, she had also accused a techie named Prashant Bankar for physically and mentally harassing her.
The Satara police have said in a statement that Badane was accused of 'unethical and indecent and irresponsible behaviour by misusing his position'. His actions were described as unbecoming of a police officer and detrimental to the public trust, it said.
The statement also termed his actions 'extremely disgraceful and condemnable'.
"Following the instructions of Special IG Sunil Phulari, Badane has been dismissed from the service under section 311 (2)(b) of Indian Constitution, effective November 4," said Satara Superintendent of Police Tushar Doshi, according to the PTI.
Section 311(2)(b) of the Constitution concerns the dismissal, removal, or reduction in rank of a civil servant. PTI SPK
