Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat on Friday said that the empowerment of women is essential for the progress of any nation, and they should be freed from regressive customs and traditions, reported the PTI.
Speaking at an event organised by non-profit organisation Udyogwardhini at Solapur in Maharashtra, Mohan Bhagwat said that the women are the most important part of any society.
"A man will work till his death. A woman will also work till the end, but beyond that, she inspires the generations that follow. It is under a woman's love and affection that children grow and mature," he said, according to the PTI.
Empowering women is crucial for national development, the RSS chief further said.
"God has given an additional quality to women, enabling them to do things that men cannot. At the same time, God has given women all the qualities he has given to men, which is why they can do whatever men can do," he said, as per the PTI.
Hence, it is foolhardy for men to claim that they will uplift women, Mohan Bhagwat remarked.
"There is no reason to have such ego. Let women do what they want. Just empower them and free them from regressive customs and traditions. When a woman uplifts herself, she uplifts entire society," he added, the PTI reported.
He also lauded the contribution of Udyogwardhini in empowering and strengthening women.
Bhagwat’s remark on leaders' retirement sparks speculation; Oppn claims rift within BJP-RSS
Meanwhile, a seemingly simple remark by RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat last week had set the political grapevine abuzz, igniting speculation and political commentary.
Bhagwat’s comment — that leaders should step aside at 75 — had drew sharp responses from Congress and Shiv Sena (UBT).
Speaking at a book release event in Nagpur on Wednesday dedicated to late RSS ideologue Moropant Pingle, Bhagwat said, “When you turn 75, it means you should stop now and make way for others,” according to the IANS.
The statement, while general in tone, instantly drew attention due to the timing, as both Bhagwat and PM Modi will turn 75 in September, just six days apart.
The Congress wasted no time in seizing the opportunity. Senior Congress leader Pawan Khera said Bhagwat’s statement brought “good news,” adding that it could mark the beginning of the end of the PM Modi era, as per the PTI.
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Priyanka Chaturvedi echoed similar sentiments, pointing to the BJP’s own precedent on retirement age.
“In 2014, when the BJP came to power, they made it a rule that anyone above 75 would shift to a guiding role. Lal Krishna Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi were moved to the 'Margdarshak Mandal'. Now the same principle should apply to everyone, including PM Modi and Bhagwat,” she told IANS.
