Mumbai commissioner launches enquiry into senior cop's role in Sanjay Dutt's parole

Mumbai police commissioner Satyapal Singh has initiated an inquiry against ACP Shivaji Kolekar of Bandra division for strongly recommending that actor Sanjay Dutt, who is currently serving a sentence at Pune’s Yerwada Jail for possessing illegal firearms meant to be used during the 1993 blasts, be given parole due to his wife’s health problems. Two weeks after Dutt was granted a month-long parole, he was released from the jail on Saturday.

“I have appointed the zonal DCP to interrogate the matter. A thorough inquiry will be conducted. If ACP Kolekar is found guilty, necessary action will be taken against him. He may even be suspended,” Singh told SUNDAY MiD DAY, while conducting a security check for NDA’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi’s rally at MMRDA grounds in Bandra Kurla Complex. DCP zone 9 Chhering Dorje will conduct inquiry against Kolekar and a report is expected to be given in the next couple of days.

Fifty four-year-old Dutt was granted a month-long parole two weeks ago after Kolekar submitted his report to divisional commissioner of Pune, Prabhakar Deshmukh. However, on December 7, MiD DAY had revealed how Dutt’s wife Maanayata went party-hopping on the night before he was granted parole, on its front page. MiD DAY had also carried photographs of Maanayata attending a film screening and a birthday party that day, which raised questions about Dutt’s claim about her illness.

While applying for parole to Pune Divisional Commissioner Deshmukh, who is authorised to grant parole, Dutt had mentioned that his wife was suffering chest pain and therefore wanted to be with her on medical grounds. A very strong recommendation for Dutt’s parole was submitted by Kolekar to Deshmukh.

While speaking earlier to this paper, ACP Kolekar had said, “The Khar police station officials first went and verified with the doctor treating Dutt that the reason mentioned in the certificate was true. To double check, senior inspector Vikas Sonawane personally went to the doctor concerned to crosscheck this. After establishing that the reason mentioned in the report was, indeed, true, we sent out the report’s findings to the divisional commissioner in Pune.”u00a0
