A week after mid-day reported on the plight of Andheri West&rsquo;s JP Road residents, over a chronic mosquito problem thanks to open drains in the ongoing civic work, the BMC has finally pulled up its socks.
For the last couple of mon&shy;ths, residents had witnessed an increase in the number of mosquitoes in their homes due to drains, which had been left open to clear clogged lines. Filth from the drain had also been piled up on one end of the road.

On February 1, mid-day had reported how repeated complaints to civic authorities to speed up repair work had fallen on deaf ears. Following the report, garbage was immediately cleared and drains were shut with concrete slabs.

While repair work is yet to be completed, residents said BMC immediately reacted to the report. &ldquo;A few days ago, mosquito fogging was carried out in the surrounding areas. Around 50 per cent of the foo&shy;tpath has been reconstr&shy;ucted and the drains have been covered, reducing foul smell in the area,&rdquo; said Anand Shirali, chairman of Dhake Colony, which was most affected due to the repairs.
&ldquo;Considering how slowly the work was moving for the last few months, we were surprised that it gathered steam within a matter of days,&rdquo; Shirali said. &ldquo;It is good to see that the BMC taking efforts to complete the work quickly after sitting on it for two months,&rdquo; he added.
