On September 13, PM Modi had earlier congratulated Sushila Karki on assuming office as the Interim Prime Minister of Nepal. He reiterated India’s commitment to Nepal’s peace, progress, and prosperity.
Sushila Karki, 73, took oath as Nepal’s Interim Prime Minister on September 12, making history as the country's first-ever woman to assume the role.
In a separate post on X, PM Modi wrote, "I extend my best wishes to Right Honourable Mrs Sushila Karki on assuming office as the Prime Minister of the Interim Government of Nepal. India remains firmly committed to the peace, progress and prosperity of the people of Nepal."
Earlier, on the same day, India officially welcomed the formation of the interim government under Karki’s leadership, expressing hope that the political transition would pave the way for greater peace and stability in Nepal.
A statement issued by India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said, "We welcome the formation of a new Interim Government in Nepal, led by Right Honourable Mrs Sushila Karki. We are hopeful that this would help in fostering peace and stability."
The MEA further added, "As a close neighbour, a fellow democracy, and a long-standing development partner, India will continue to work closely with Nepal for the well-being and prosperity of our two peoples and nations."
Karki rose to prominence following the collapse of the KP Sharma Oli-led government amid widespread Gen-Z-led protests. Her appointment came after activists, frustrated by Oli’s administration, demanded new leadership.
