Two college students were killed and as many others were injured after their car rammed into a container truck on the Mumbai-Bengaluru Highway in Pune district early Thursday morning, police said, reported news agency PTI.

The accident took place near Eidgah Maidan, close to Dehu Road along the highway, at around 5.45 am when the four students were returning from Lonavala hill station, reported PTI.


The car hit a container truck from behind, an official from Dehu Road police station said.



All four were BBA students of the Symbiosis College and had gone to Lonavala for an outing. The accident occurred while they were returning to Pune, he said, reported PTI.

"Due to the impact of the collision, Divya Raj Singh Rathod (20) and Siddhant Anand Shekhar (20) died on the spot, while two others -- Harsh Mishra (21) and Nihar Tamboli (20) -- suffered minor injuries. The injured persons have been admitted to a hospital," the official said, reported PTI.

The police have taken the truck driver, identified as Manish Kumar Suraj Manipal (39), resident of Wadala in Mumbai, into custody, and further probe is on into the incident, the official added, reported PTI.

20 passengers injured after private bus hits another vehicle on Mumbai-Nashik highway

In another incident, as many as 20 passengers of a private bus sustained injuries after it hit another vehicle near Ghoti in Maharashtra's Nashik district on Monday evening, police said, reported PTI.

The accident took place on the Mumbai-Nashik highway when the private bus was going towards Panvel in Navi Mumbai from Chalisgaon in Jalgaon district of north Maharashtra, an official said, reported PTI.

The driver lost control and the bus crashed into another vehicle. As many as 20 passengers of the private bus were injured in the accident and rushed to a local hospital for treatment, he added.

Passenger gets trapped under train in Akola; rescued

Meanwhile, a 50-year-old man sustained injuries after he slipped while alighting a train and got trapped under it in Maharashtra's Akola district, the Railway Police said on Tuesday, reported PTI.

The incident occurred at the Murtijapur railway station around 4.20 pm on Monday, an official said.

Mushtaq Khan Moin Khan was alighting from the Pune-Amravati train on platform no. 2 when he lost his footing, slipped and got trapped under the train, he said, reported PTI.

The official said the Railway Police had to extricate the injured passenger with the help of a local rescue team, and a gas cutter was used to remove the footboard of the train and pull him out safely, reported PTI.

Khan suffered serious injuries to his legs and was rushed to a local government hospital, where he is undergoing treatment, he added.
