Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Nitin Nabin on Tuesday formally assumed charge as the national president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, outgoing party chief JP Nadda as well as several senior leaders, and chief ministers from BJP-ruled states.
Nabin, a senior politician, is a five-time member of the Bihar Legislative Assembly and a former minister in the state government. He is widely recognised for his organisational skills and administrative experience.
Born on May 23, 1980, in Ranchi, Jharkhand, Nabin entered electoral politics at a young age. He was first elected to the Bihar Legislative Assembly in 2006 from the Patna West Assembly Constituency. Since 2010, he has been consecutively elected from the Bankipur Assembly Constituency, winning elections in 2010, 2015, 2020, and 2025, making him a five-time MLA. During his political career, he has held key Cabinet portfolios in the Bihar government, including Road Construction, Urban Development & Housing, and Law.
In addition to his legislative work, Nabin has played a significant role in party organisation, holding leadership positions at both the state and national levels. He has also been assigned important organisational responsibilities in states such as Sikkim and Chhattisgarh.
The process for the election of the BJP National President began after 30 of the party’s 36 state presidents were elected, surpassing the required 50 per cent threshold. The election schedule was announced on January 16, 2026, along with the release of the electoral roll.
As per the schedule, the nomination process was held on January 19, 2026, between 2 pm and 4 pm. A total of 37 sets of nomination papers were submitted in support of Nitin Nabin for the post of national president, with proposals from senior leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, and Rajnath Singh.
BJP leader K Laxman also announced that Nitin Nabin had been proposed for the post of BJP National President after 37 sets of nomination papers were received in his favour.
“Nitin Nabin is boss and I am a party worker”: PM Modi
PM Modi on Tuesday welcomed the appointment of the new BJP National President, stating that in party matters, Nabin is the boss and he himself is only a party worker.
Addressing a gathering at the BJP headquarters in the national capital, PM Modi congratulated Nabin on being elected president of what he described as the world’s largest political party, and said the role comes with responsibilities that go beyond managing the BJP.
“When it is about the party, Nitin Nabin is the boss, and I am a party worker. Now Honourable Nitin Nabin ji is the president of all of us, and his responsibility is not just to manage the BJP, but also to ensure coordination among all NDA allies,” PM Modi said.
Emphasising the significance of the coming years, the PM stated, "The next 25 years are very important. This is the period when a developed India is to be built, and it is destined to happen.”
He expressed confidence in Nabin’s leadership and said that the new party chief will carry forward BJP's legacy.
Referring to generational change within the party, PM Modi remarked, “To put it in the language of today’s youth, Nitin ji himself is, in a way, a millennial.” He noted that the 45-year-old leader belongs to a generation that has witnessed major economic, social, and technological changes, saying, “He belongs to the generation that received information from the radio in their childhood and is now an active user of AI.”
“Nitin ji possesses both youthful energy and extensive experience in organisational work. This will be very beneficial for every worker of our party," Modi further stated.
