Expressing grief over the student’s death, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi said all culprits in the case will face the strictest punishment under the law

The Odisha college student who set herself ablaze following alleged sexual harassment by a professor died at AIIMS here, the hospital said. The second-year Integrated B.Ed student of Fakir Mohan (Autonomous) College, Balasore, died on Monday night, after fighting for her life for three days. She had taken the extreme step on Saturday over alleged inaction against the professor and suffered 95 per cent burns.
Expressing grief over the student’s death, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi said all culprits in the case will face the strictest punishment under the law. CM said, “I assure the family of the deceased student that all those guilty in this case will face the strictest punishment as per the law. For this, I have personally issued instructions to the authorities.” Her body was consigned to flames at a crematorium in her village in Odisha’s Balasore district on Tuesday morning. Thousands of people thronged the crematorium ground to attend her cremation.
CM announces ex-gratia
CM Majhi also announced an ex-gratia of Rs 20 lakh for the family and directed officers concerned to conduct a proper investigation into the incident. “My daughter has taught me to fight and I will continue it. I do not need the money or ex-gratia. I want my daughter back. Can the government give me back my child,” the woman’s father said with tears rolling down his cheeks. “Please forgive me. I am speechless,” said the mother while asked about her demands. The deceased student’s grandfather said that the government “failed” to give her justice for which she ended her life.
Special police team formed
Police have set up a swift trial initiative (STI) team to expedite the probe. DIG of Police (Eastern Range) Satyajit Naik said the STI team will ensure speed and coordinated investigation of the case.
‘Organised murder by system’
Attacking the ruling BJP, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday alleged it was nothing less than an “organised murder by the system”. Gandhi alleged that those who were supposed to protect her kept “breaking her”. Gandhi claimed the girl’s death was not suicide, it was an organised murder by the system. LoP in Odisha Assembly Naveen Patnaik said the death of the college student was due to “failure of the system”. Patnaik-led BJD also demanded a judicial inquiry into the “planned injustice” and asked the Odisha government to publicly tender an apology.
