Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday joined the INDIA bloc MPs in a protest outside Parliament at Makar Dwar, opposing the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in poll-bound Bihar and the reported arrests of labourers in BJP-ruled states, reported ANI.

Standing alongside her daughter and Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi held a banner reading ‘SIR – Attack on Democracy.’ Senior leaders, including Pramod Tiwari and Manickam Tagore, also participated in the demonstration.

Trinamool Congress (TMC) MPs also joined the INDIA bloc protest on Wednesday, voicing their opposition to the reported arrests of labourers in BJP-ruled states. While the TMC has been holding separate protests in recent days over the alleged mistreatment of Bengalis in other states, they united with the larger opposition demonstration today, reported ANI.

During the protest, several MPs held caricature posters criticising the Election Commission (EC). One striking cartoon depicted a man labelled “EC” dressed in a uniform and shackled, clutching what appeared to be an Electronic Voting Machine (EVM), with a speech bubble reading “YES SIR.” The cartoon was shared online with the pointed hashtag #SIR, highlighting the opposition’s allegation that the Election Commission is working under pressure from the central government, particularly in light of recent events in Bihar.

MPs of the INDIA bloc have been protesting against the voter roll revision since the commencement of the monsoon session on July 21, both in and outside of Parliament.

Earlier on July 29, multiple leaders, including Congress MPs Gaurav Gogoi, Manickam Tagore, Hibi Eden, DMK MP Kanimozhi, JMM MP Mahua Maji, and RJD MP Manoj Jha, protested in the ongoing rain ahead of the commencement of today's session in Parliament, holding up posters and demanding a halt to the exercise. Congress MP Manickam Tagore posted a cartoon on X, mocking the Election Commission of India (ECI) in connection with the recent controversy over the SIR, reported ANI.

Meanwhile, the Lok Sabha's List of Business for Wednesday mentions that Union Home Minister Amit Shah will move a resolution to extend President's Rule in Manipur, an extension sought for another six months in the wake of ongoing ethnic violence in the state, reported ANI.

President’s Rule was initially imposed on February 13, shortly after Chief Minister N. Biren Singh tendered his resignation, reported ANI.

Under the motion, the President's rule will be extended till February 13, 2026, after the Parliament's concession.
