Several MPs of the INDIA bloc parties, including Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge and Congress parliamentary party chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Samajwadi Party’s Akhilesh Yadav, TMC’s Derek O’Brien and Sagarika Ghose, protested in the Parliament House complex on Monday against the Election Commission’s voter roll revision in Bihar, and demanded its rollback.

There was a huge banner in front of them which read ‘SIR- Attack on Democracy’ as they lined up on and near the steps of the Makar Dwar of Parliament and staged a protest for the fifth consecutive day. With ‘Stop SIR’ placards in hand, several Opposition MPs participated in the protest and raised slogans. “In Parliament, the INDIA bloc will continue to raise the voice for the rights of the people.

Implementing SIR across the country to systematically deprive weaker sections of their voting rights will not be tolerated!” Kharge said. “SIR is a dangerous conspiracy to steal votes. It is a direct attack on democracy and the Constitution,” said Rahul.

No interim stay: SC

The Supreme Court on Monday refused to stay the publication of draft electoral rolls in poll-bound Bihar saying it would once for all decide the pleas against the electoral rolls revision. A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi said it would on July 29 fix the time schedule to conduct the final hearing of the matter.

The bench noted the election commission’s statement that the enumeration forms for the SIR could be submitted even after the publication of draft rolls and asked the poll panel to continue accepting Aadhaar and voter ID for the SIR exercise in Bihar.
