Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi on Monday accused opposition parties of shielding illegal immigrants, claiming infiltration had triggered a “demographic crisis” in eastern states like Bihar, Assam, and West Bengal, leaving people “worried for the honour of their sisters and daughters”, news agency PTI reported.
Addressing a rally in Bihar’s Purnea, PM Modi slammed the Congress for allegedly comparing Biharis to ‘bidis,’ calling it an insult to the state and its people. He claimed parties like Congress and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) have endangered the security and resources of Bihar and the nation by defending and shielding foreign infiltrators.
“This is why I announced a demography mission from the Red Fort on Independence Day. But vote-bank politics have Congress, RJD, and their ecosystem busy defending foreign infiltrators,” Modi said.
He accused opposition parties of raising slogans and conducting yatras in support of infiltrators, referring to the Congress’ recently concluded Voter Adhikar Yatra, PTI reported. Modi asserted that the NDA government is committed to driving out all infiltrators and that the law of the land will prevail over the whims of illegal immigrants.
In a veiled reference to electoral roll revision ahead of Bihar assembly polls, Modi said the people of the state and the country will give a befitting reply to Congress and RJD, which he claimed are protecting infiltrators under the pretext of raising issues.
Modi also criticised a Kerala Congress tweet, which linked Biharis to bidis, calling it a “sheer insult” and promising a response from the people in the coming days, reported PTI. He highlighted the new goods and services tax (GST) rates effective from September 22, calling them a “major gift to the middle and lower classes” that will make festival shopping and daily household purchases easier.
PM Modi reiterated that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government works for common people, contrasting it with Congress and RJD, which he said filled their own coffers while in power. He was referring to a famous statement by a late Congress Prime Minister, noting that only 15 paise of every rupee reached the people while the rest was misused.
Modi highlighted initiatives like free rations since the Covid-19 pandemic and Ayushman Bharat Yojana, asserting these programmes show the government’s focus on public welfare. He also promoted the Makhana Board for boosting cultivation in Bihar, taking a subtle dig at opposition leaders unfamiliar with local produce.
