Doctors at Sassoon hospital are incensed with the Pune police. On Sunday evening, some police officials reportedly rushed to Sassoon hospital, demanding to know which doctor had allowed the media to interview terror victims.
"We were informed that the resident medical officer Dr Asha Vikhe-Patil, who was in-charge of operations that day, had accompanied some reporters to the ward. Some senior officials in the home ministry had expressed serious dissatisfaction with this and demanded strict action against the erring doctors. However, no orders seeking action have been served to us," said Dr Arun Jamkar, dean, Sassoon hospital.
Jamkar added that yesterday, when Dr Vijay Kumar Gavit, Minister for Medical Education, visited the Sassoon Hospital to meet the terror victims, the doctors at the hospital took up the case with him. "He assured us that no staffer would be suspended as all have done good work," said Jamkar.
Meanwhile, doctors at the hospital showed hostility towards police officials who, they believe, made them a scapegoat. "Security is a police concern. Our job is treating patients. They should have monitored who entered and left the ward. They are making scapegoats out of us to hide their incompetence," said a senior doctor requesting anonymity.
Meanwhile, according to fresh instructions issued by the police department to all hospitals, entry to the wards where patients are recuperating is restricted to doctors, close relatives and police personnel.
