Incident in southeast Delhi; police to lodge FIR after post mortem

In a mysterious incident, seven street dogs were poisoned by unknown persons in Abul Fazal Enclave in Jamia Nagar area of southeast Delhi late on Wednesday night. There were reports that the canines were served meat laced with poisonous substances.

A police officer said that all the seven dogs were immediately rushed to an NGO's office which works for street dogs in Jangpura area.

Geeta Seshamani, the spokesperson of the Friendicoes SPCA, said that one of the dogs was alive and was being treated by the NGO's medical staff. "A police officer had brought the seven dogs to our office. All of them were medically examined; six were declared brought dead. One dog is alive and is undergoing treatment. We are looking after him.

We will take time to ascertain what they had eaten," said Geeta. A police officer close to the investigation said that the incident took place merely 100 metres away from a famous meat shop of the area.

"The dogs were vomiting and then fell unconscious. A person named Akhtar who had come to buy meat noticed the dogs lying on the road and informed the police. We rushed to the spot and immediately hired an SUV to take them to a nearby animal hospital. Akhtar told us about Friendicoes SPCA, the NGO, and gave us its office address. We took all the dogs there," said the officer.

The officer further stated that a post mortem of the six dead canines will be conducted today. Police will also lodge an FIR in this respect.

"It is for the first time when such an incident has taken place in Jamia Nagar. We have no clues why the culprit served poisonous food to street dogs," the officer said.
