The <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/maharashtra-weather-updates-imd-predicts-heavy-rain-and-thunderstorms-in-parts-of-maharashtra-issues-yellow-alert-23651122" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">India Meteorological Department (IMD)</a> on Monday said the southwest monsoon had withdrawn further from parts of Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana, marking the continued retreat of the rainy season from parts of northern India.
The southwest monsoon had covered the entire country by July 9, following its onset over Kerala on June 4.
According to the IMD, the withdrawal line currently passes through Jaisalmer, Nagaur, Sikar, Rohtak, Patiala and Gurdaspur.
The weather department said that the atmospheric conditions are favourable for the monsoon to withdraw further from the remaining parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Rajasthan, Saurashtra, Kutch, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and West Uttar Pradesh over the next two to three days.
<h2>Low-pressure system likely to intensify</h2>
While the monsoon retreats from northern India, a well-marked low-pressure area over the westcentral and adjoining eastcentral Bay of Bengal continues to persist, the IMD said.
The <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/news/india-news/article/himachal-monsoon-update-no-severe-weather-warning-after-august-23-says-imd-23645538" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">associated cyclonic circulation</a> extends up to 7.6 km above mean sea level.
The weather system is very likely to move west-northwestwards and intensify into a depression within the next 24 hours, the weather department said.
It is then expected to move further in the same direction and intensify into a deep depression over the westcentral and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal.
<h2>System to approach Andhra Pradesh-Odisha coast</h2>
The <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/news/india-news/article/imd-monsoon-forecast-rainfall-likely-below-normal-in-second-half-of-season-says-weather-department-23642597" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">deep depression</a> is expected to move towards the north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coasts and reach the area around the morning of September 23.
The development could bring changes in weather conditions along parts of the eastern coast.
The IMD has advised coastal communities, local authorities and maritime operators in Odisha and Andhra Pradesh to closely monitor official weather advisories as the system moves towards the coast.
<h2>Two troughs influencing weather</h2>
The IMD has also identified two major troughs influencing weather patterns over the region.
One north-south trough extends from the North Bay of Bengal to the cyclonic circulation associated with the well-marked low-pressure area.
A second trough extends outwards from the core of the cyclonic circulation linked to the system.
The IMD said these weather systems will continue to influence conditions over the region as the <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/monsoon-updates-heavy-july-rains-reverse-indias-monsoon-deficit-despite-el-nino-concerns-23642412" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">low-pressure system intensifies</a> and moves towards the coast.
