Three people were arrested after villagers in Maharashtra’s Palghar district allegedly blocked vehicles linked to a power project and attacked police officers who tried to intervene, an official said on Wednesday.

The incident took place on Tuesday evening in Kurje village, located in Vikramgad taluka, according to the news agency PTI.

According to officials, the confrontation began when local residents, opposing the power project, prevented project-related vehicles from entering the area.

After being alerted, a team of cops from the Vikramagad police station reached the village and tried to pacify the villagers. However, the residents refused to allow the vehicles to proceed, the official said, reported news agency PTI.

During this time, 15-20 villagers allegedly attacked the police team, injuring some of the cops, the official said.

A case has been registered and three persons have been arrested, the official said, adding that efforts are being made to track down other accused in the case.

Maharashtra: Two women Naxalites killed in police encounter in Gadchiroli

Two women Maoists were killed in an encounter with police in Gadchiroli district, police said on Wednesday.

Police stated that they received information that a few members of Gatta LOS were camping in the forest near Modaske Village under Police Station Gatta Jambhiya in Etapalli Taluka.

"An operation under Addnl SP Aheri Satya Sai Karthik, along with 5 C60 units, was launched from Aheri. Gatta Jambhiya Post party and CRPF E Coy 191 Bn assisted the operation team in laying the outer cordon. When the C60 contingent was searching the jungle area, they were fired at indiscriminately by Maoists, and they responded effectively," explained Neelotpal, Superintendent of Police, Gadchiroli.

The jungle search resulted in the recovery of two female Maoist bodies, along with an automatic AK-47 rifle, a sophisticated pistol, live ammunition, a large quantity of literature, and belongings.

Further operations are continuing in the area.

Earlier in September, two Naxalites, each carrying a bounty of Rs 8 lakh, were killed in an encounter with security forces in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district on Friday morning, police said.

According to officials, acting on credible intelligence inputs about the presence of Maoists in the southwestern region of Bijapur, a search operation was launched by a team of the District Reserve Guard (DRG). The operation led to an exchange of fire on the morning of September 12, during which two Maoists were killed.
