Police had to fire teargas shells on Friday afternoon to bring a violent situation under control after two groups clashed in Yavat, located in Pune's Daund tehsil, over a social media post.
According to officials, tensions flared when a youth from one community allegedly shared an objectionable post online, triggering anger among members of another group.
"An irate mob vandalised structures and properties belonging to the opposite community, pelted stones and also set a motorcycle ablaze. We had to lob teargas shells to disperse the mob and restore law and order. A sizable number of police personnel have been deployed at the site. The youth who uploaded the post has been detained," the official said, reported news agency PTI.
Sandip Singh Gill, Superintendent of Police (Pune Rural), visited the site and urged people to maintain calm. He also warned against the spreading of rumours.
Maharashtra NCP MP Supriya Sule took to X to address the situation in Daund’s Yavat area, where tensions have flared between two groups. In her post, she urged people to remain calm and avoid falling for rumours. "Let’s all show restraint and work together to restore peace and normalcy in our taluka," she appealed.

Ajit Pawar warns NCP workers against misconduct, says such acts tarnish party image
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and NCP president Ajit Pawar on Friday cautioned party workers against misconduct, including public disturbances and celebratory firing, saying such actions tarnish the reputation of both the individual and the party.
His remarks come in the wake of two recent controversies linked to NCP members, which included an incident in Pune district where the brother of an NCP MLA allegedly fired a gun at a "tamasha" venue in Daund.
"Do not go to Chaufula and do not open fire in the air. Such acts not only bring disrepute to the individual but also to the party," he told party functionaries at a gathering in Pune, reported news agency PTI.
