The conversation between PM Modi and President Lula comes after India and Brazil were slapped with huge tariffs by the Trump administration.
US President Donald Trump had on Wednesday signed an order to impose an additional 25 per cent tariff on Indian goods over New Delhi's continued purchase of Russian oil, a key revenue source for Moscow's war in Ukraine.
The 50 per cent tariff on India, set to take effect in three weeks, comes on top of a separate 25 percent duty entering into force on Thursday, according to the text of the executive order released by the White House.
The order also threatens potential penalties on other countries deemed to be "directly or indirectly importing Russian Federation oil."
India's foreign ministry earlier said US pressure to stop it buying Russian oil was "unjustified and unreasonable" and that it would protect its interests.
Meanwhile, earlier, the Trump administration had announced a 50 per cent tariff on imports from Brazil, starting August 1.
Following Trump's orders, India's competitors will be much better placed in the US market as their duty is lower - Myanmar (40 per cent), Thailand and Cambodia (both 36 per cent), Bangladesh (35 per cent), Indonesia (32 per cent), China and Sri Lanka (both 30 per cent), Malaysia (25 per cent), Philippines and Vietnam (both 20 per cent).
