Statistics released by premier orthopedic centre Sancheti Hospital reveal that 20 per cent of all patients with foot and ankle related conditions have high heels to blame.u00a0 Ishwar Bhiregoudar, the store manager of India Bulls mall at Senapati Bapat Marg, confirmed that the sale of high heel shoes has been steadily increasing for the last three years. "We have witnessed a 30 per cent rise in the sale of pencil heel footwear. Most of the buyers are in the 18 to 25 years bracket. Older women prefer flat heels," added Bhiregoudar.u00a0u00a0 Dr Surendra Patil, a surgeon with a premier orthopaedic hospital, explained that high heels disturb physiological balance by transferring the entire body weight on the forefeet. "Such shoes push the upper body forward and makes the posterior jut out. The forced posture causes back pain. In my practice, I have witnessed a 20 to 30 per cent rise in such high-heel related conditions over the last five years," explained Patil. Dr Parag Sancheti of the Sancheti Hospital added that wearing pencil high heels isu00a0 particularly bad for women above 30. Model Jasmeet Mathuru said she tried hard to protect her feet from getting damaged by high heels. "We cannot do much about it as it's part of our job. The pain does get unbearable at times. I wear flats when I am not on an assignment," said Mathuru.
