Rescue operation in Sikkim’s Mangan district was badly affected by a landslide on May 31. The landslide damaged several properties and blocked roads, making it hard for rescue teams to reach the area. The rescue mission began after a tragic accident on May 29, when a tourist vehicle carrying 11 people, including the driver, fell nearly 1,000 feet into the Teesta River. So far, one body has been found, while ten people are still missing. Teams from the Army, ITBP, NDRF, Sikkim Police, and the Tourism Department are working together on the rescue. Two people with serious injuries were rescued and taken to STNM Hospital in Gangtok. Anand Gurung, a rescue volunteer from the Tourism Department, said, “We were on our way to search for the missing tourists, but the road is blocked for the next 7 to 8 kilometers. No vehicles can pass, so we can’t reach the spot today. The teams already there are continuing the rescue work.” Watch video.
