The RCF police in Chembur East have registered a case against three individuals for reckless driving on the Eastern Express Highway near the Hazrat Syed Abdul Kader Rahul Dargah in Chembur. The incident came to light after a viral video was shared on X.
The video showed a white car being driven at dangerously high speed. The driver and several passengers were seen leaning out of the windows and dangling their limbs out of the moving vehicle, posing a serious threat to themselves and others on the road. Following the viral footage, a formal complaint was lodged by the RCF police under Sections 281, 125, and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with Section 184 of the Motor Vehicles Act.
We need to raise awareness that such stunts, done within a car, outside of a vehicle or in public transport, are not cool, only dangerously irresponsible and cruel. We have witnessed our infantile stuntmen in trains too, hanging outside bogeys and on rail bars, clambering on the roofs, putting not only themselves but others, too, at huge risk.
In this particular incident, the car itself was being driven at high speed, an invitation for disaster and death. There has to be a realisation that one can take away somebody else’s life in a fraction of a second. If you do not care for your life, think about another person whose life may be over in a trice because of speeding. We may need a campaign against stunts on the roads, with the traffic police and other transport arm heads coming up with a sustained, hard-hitting drive that is creative, memorable and drives the message home.
Even school syllabi must have lessons on civic sense and responsibilities, which will raise awareness at a young age. Lastly, punitive measures should deter others from copying this foolishness to garner followers and social media likes.
