Reports about a COVID-19 spread are trickling in. The BMC recently informed that, alongside COVID-19, surveillance for ILI (influenza-like illness) and SARI (severe acute respiratory infection) is ongoing. Suspected patients are being tested for COVID-19. Those found positive are being treated as per protocol. Genome sequencing, which helps in identifying viral variants, tracing transmission pathways, and developing effective diagnostic and therapeutic strategies, is being conducted for positive samples, according to reports.
COVID-appropriate behaviour is being emphasised by health officials. The BMC has stated that public health laboratories are equipped with the necessary facilities. The health department is closely monitoring the situation across the city. A few cases showed co-infection with H3N2 and other respiratory viruses as per genomic sequencing. Mortality reports are also being reviewed by the death audit committee. While there is no cause for alarm, those in charge are advising caution. We think it is a good idea to revert to some COVID-19 behaviour.
Prime amongst this is an emphasis on hygiene and sanitation. This is the best habit that many may have picked up during the pandemic, approximately 2.5 years ago. If this has been forgotten or pushed to the back-burner as the threat of COVID-19 faded, it is time to revive this and make it part of one’s lifetime. Wash hands frequently and well, and follow other instructions. Suffice to say, make washing hands regularly a part of one’s life.
With that, of course, is the lesson to keep one’s surroundings as clean as possible. Insist on cleanliness in the neighbourhood and get involved in citizen initiatives for cleanliness. Hygiene is important for the prevention of so many ailments. COVID or not, its return or not, cleanliness cannot have a season or COVID reason, it should be for life.
