A breakthrough in black hole physics has confirmed Stephen Hawking’s 1972 “area law,” which states that the event horizon of a merged black hole is larger than the originals combined.

On January 14, LIGO detected GW250114, the loudest gravitational-wave signal from colliding black holes. Analysis verified Einstein’s general relativity with precision and validated Hawking’s theory.

Published in Physical Review Letters, the study highlights gravitational waves as vital tools for exploring cosmic evolution.
