North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has defended his country’s nuclear weapons programme, citing the ongoing Iran conflict as evidence of the need for strong military deterrence, reported news agency ANI.
In remarks reported by state media, Kim asserted that national security and sovereignty can only be ensured through powerful defence capabilities, signalling a continued commitment to strengthening North Korea’s nuclear arsenal.
Iran Conflict Cited as Strategic Justification
Speaking at a session of North Korea’s Supreme People’s Assembly, Kim pointed to the ongoing war involving Iran as a key example of global instability. He accused the United States of engaging in military interventions and conflicts across regions, using the current crisis as justification for Pyongyang’s nuclear posture, reported ANI.
According to reports, Kim stated that a nation’s dignity and long-term security depend on possessing strong military capabilities, including nuclear deterrence.
North Korea Vows to Strengthen Nuclear Arsenal
Kim reaffirmed that North Korea will continue to enhance its “defensive nuclear deterrence” and maintain a state of readiness to respond swiftly to any perceived threats, reported ANI.
He emphasised that the country would further solidify its status as a nuclear weapons state and remain prepared to counter what it described as hostile actions from adversaries, reported ANI.
Sharp Rhetoric Against South Korea
In a significant escalation, Kim also labelled South Korea as the “most hostile nation” and warned of severe consequences if Seoul engages in actions perceived as provocative.
He stated that Pyongyang would formally disregard and ignore South Korea in its policies, while maintaining readiness to respond to any confrontation.
Trump Signals Possible Negotiations with Iran
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump indicated that negotiations with Iran may be underway and expressed optimism about a possible end to the conflict.
Trump claimed that Iran’s military capabilities had been significantly weakened and suggested that diplomatic efforts could lead to a resolution, though he stopped short of confirming any formal agreement.
Iran Denies Talks, Conflict Continues
Iran, however, has denied reports of ongoing negotiations, maintaining that peace can only be achieved if military actions by the United States and Israel cease.
The conflict has continued to escalate, with Iranian forces reportedly launching multiple waves of retaliatory strikes, further complicating prospects for immediate de-escalation, reported ANI.
Global Security Concerns Deepen
Kim Jong Un’s remarks come at a time of heightened geopolitical tensions, with the West Asia conflict influencing strategic calculations across multiple regions, reported ANI.
His statement underscores how the crisis is being interpreted beyond the Middle East, potentially shaping defence policies and military postures in countries like North Korea.
As diplomatic efforts remain uncertain and hostilities continue, the situation is likely to have far-reaching implications for global security and nuclear non-proliferation efforts.
