Mumbai is likely to witness the onset of the southwest monsoon within the next three days, as conditions continue to turn favourable for its further advance, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
In an update issued on May 25, 2025, the IMD confirmed that the monsoon has already reached into significant parts of the country.
The southwest monsoon has advanced into more parts of the west central and east central Arabian Sea, parts of Karnataka, the entire state of Goa, portions of Maharashtra, parts of the west central and north Bay of Bengal, and regions of Mizoram, Manipur, and Nagaland. The Northern Limit of Monsoon (NLM) now passes through Devgad, Belagavi, Haveri, Mandya, Dharmapuri, Chennai, and further northeast through Aizawl and Kohima.
“Conditions are favourable for further advance of the southwest monsoon into some more parts of the central Arabian Sea, more areas of Maharashtra including Mumbai, Karnataka including Bengaluru, parts of Andhra Pradesh, remaining regions of Tamil Nadu, additional parts of the Bay of Bengal, and more areas of the Northeast during the next three days,” the IMD stated.
Between May 25 and May 29, the IMD has forecast moderate to heavy rainfall in Palghar, Thane, Mumbai, Raigad, and other districts of Maharashtra. These regions may also experience thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds at isolated places. Additionally, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts are expected to witness heavy to very heavy rainfall during this period.
Pre-monsoon showers have already offered some relief from hot weather conditions in Mumbai and many parts of Maharashtra.
Mumbai has been witnessing rains from past several days and the city on Saturday night experienced heavy downpour that continued on Sunday.
The depression in the Arabian Sea brought rainfall to several regions in Maharashtra.
Meanwhile, ahead of the arrival of monsoon in Mumbai, the civic authorities in city, including BMC, have stepped up monsoon preparedness by clearing drains and flood-prone areas.
Furthermore, IMD has stated that heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds is anticipated in certain areas of Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and West Bengal. On May 25 and 26, Bihar might see winds of 70 mph with unusual May weather.
Meanwhile, the IMD has issued a warning for North Maharashtra coast (upto 75km from the coast) and for South Maharashtra–Goa coast (upto 75km from the coast).
It said that squally weather with wind speed 35 kmph to 50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph along and off North Konkan and squally weather with wind speed 35 kmph to 50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph along and off South Konkan-Goa from May 25 to May 30, 2025.
The weather department said that the fishermen are advised not to venture into the above -mentioned area during this period.
