Overnight record-breaking rainfall pounded cities east of Tokyo, particularly China prefecture, flooding roads, homes, and railway tracks. The disaster caused power outages, left at least five people dead, and left one person missing.
As the rain briefly subsided on Friday morning, the Japan Meteorological Agency downgraded its top-tier heavy rain warning for over a dozen municipalities, though more rain was forecast later in the day.
