The Maharashtra government has announced a policy to reclaim encroached mangrove and government land by rehabilitating eligible occupants instead of regularising illegal settlements. A statewide survey of people who settled on such land before January 1, 2011, will be completed within the next three months

In an official statement, the Maharashtra government said that the occupants will be rehabilitated appropriately through SRA (Slum Rehabilitation Authority), MHADA, or other housing schemes. The announcement was made by Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule in the assembly
