The WAQF Amendment Bill 2025 that recently got passed in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha is facing opposition from several Muslim organisations in India. This bill brings several changes to the WAQF Act 1995 which governs the administration of waqf properties in India. The bill got passed in the Parliament amidst a heated debate. To protest the bill, members of the Muslim community took to the streets in various cities. Visuals emerged from Ahmedabad, Kolkata and Bengaluru where they demanded rollback of the controversial bill.

The government claims - the WAQF Amendment Bill - now renamed to UMEED - will bring greater accountability and efficiency.

They claimed their concerns were not being heard in the Upper House. The second part of the Parliament’s budget session began today and will run until April 4. Earlier, on Thursday, a delegation from the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) met with the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal. They urged the government to introduce a "unique ID" system on voter cards to curb the inclusion of fake voters in the electoral rolls.
