Continuous heavy rain and landslides in North Sikkim have left 9 tourists missing and more than 1,400 people stranded. The strong current of the Teesta River has badly damaged the base of the Phidang Bailey Bridge, putting the region at risk of being completely cut off. Local residents and the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) worked through the night to keep the bridge usable. However, its condition depends on how much more the river rises. Despite repeated requests from locals to repair the bridge, the District Collector has reportedly refused, saying it is still in working condition. Watch video.
