Lok Sabha Elections 2024: BJP announces PM Modi’s candidature from Varanasi

BJP has fielded PM Modi from Varanasi for the upcoming Lok Sabha Elections 2024. BJP on March 02 released its first list of 195 candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha Polls. Of 195 candidates, 34 are ministers from the Centre, States while two are former CMs. The party Notably, PM Narendra Modi will be seeking the third consecutive term from Varanasi constituency. Taking to X, PM Modi expressed his gratitude to the party and its workers for showing a constant faith in him. He further said that efforts made by the Centre in last ten years will continue with even greater vigour. In 2014, PM Modi defeated AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal and in 2019, he won against Samajwadi Party’s Shalini Yadav.

On 20th of February, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’ reached UP’s Raebareli. Congress and BJP workers confronted each other with loud slogans during the rally. During his speech, Rahul Gandhi made a derogatory remark that sparked controversy. While addressing the public in Amethi, he said that "the youths of UP were on a trip after boozing by night. I went to Varanasi and I saw people lying on roads drunk. Furious by his remark BJP workers purified Rahul Gandhi’s speech area with ‘Ganga Jal’. On the other hand, UP Minister Dinesh Pratap Singh lambasted Rahul Gandhi and also appealed to him to apologize. Meanwhile, agitated WCD Minister Smriti Irani raised questions on Congress MP’s upbringing. Notably, a massive protest was staged by BJP workers during his rally in Amethi too on Feb 19. Carrying Lord Rama’s flags, the workers raised ‘Modi-Modi’, ‘Jai Shree Ram’ and ‘Rahul Gandhi Go Back’ slogans.

Gyanvapi Case: Court allows Hindus to pray at sealed basement of mosque

In a big win for the Hindu side in the Gyanvapi case, the Varanasi district court allowed to offer prayers inside the sealed basement of Gyanvapi Mosque. The court ordered that the barricades in the basement have to be removed in seven days and puja is allowed in ‘Vyas ka Taykhana’. The mosque is located next to the Kashi Vishwanath temple in Varanasi and Hindu litigants in the district court had sought the survey to determine whether a temple existed at the same spot earlier which was proved in the recent survey. The survey of the Gyanvapi mosque premises began after the Allahabad High Court rejected the petition filed by Muslim litigants seeking a stay on the Varanasi court's order for a scientific survey by the ASI. Further details are awaited on the case.

Gyanvapi Row: Vishnu Shankar Jain demands withdrawal of stay on ASI survey

The Gyanvapi row took fresh turn after ASI report was made public on Jan 24 on direction of Varanasi district court. Hindu side Advocate Vishnu Shankar Jain on Jan 25 claimed existence of Hindu Temple prior to construction of the existing structure. He cited ASI’s “conclusive finding” in the report which brought about elation amongst the Hindu side petitioner and lawyers. Meanwhile, Jain on January 29 filled an application in SC demanding withdrawal of stay order on survey given on 19 May 2023. He said ASI should be allowed to conduct a study and feature study of the 'Wazukhana' area.

Gyanvapi Mosque case: ASI to provide survey reports to both the sides

The Varanasi district Court on Wednesday asked that the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) report be made public today and the hard copy be provided to both sides in relation to the Gyanvapi Mosque case. Earlier on January 16, the Supreme Court allowed an application of Hindu women petitioners seeking direction for cleaning the entire area of 'Wazukhana' of Gyanvapi mosque where the alleged 'Shivling' was found and maintaining hygienic condition. A bench of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra said the area of 'Wazukhana' shall be cleaned under the supervision of district administration Varanasi, having regard to the previous orders of the apex court.

Swarved Mahamandir: PM Modi inaugurates ‘World’s Largest Meditation Centre’

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the world’s largest meditation centre, Swarved Mahamandir in Varanasi on December 18. Swarved Mahamandir is located in Umraha, Varanasi around 12 km from the city centre. The colossal structure is a seven-story building which is spread over 3,00,000 square feet. Around 3137 verses from the spiritual text ‘Swarved’ are engraved on its walls. The Swarved is a spiritual text authored by Sadguru Shri Sadafal Deoji Maharaj. According to the temple website, around 20,000 people can sit together and meditate in the meditation centre. PM is currently on a two-day visit to his parliamentary constituency Varanasi. He was welcomed by a cheerful crowd of people on either side of the road, waving at his motorcade.
