Button grabbed his fourth career pole ahead of Brawn teammate Rubens Barrichello and German Red Bull racer Sebastian Vettel for Sunday's season opener.

The big surprise was the failure of world champion Lewis Hamilton to reach the third and final stage of the knockout qualifying format and he was credited with 15th place.
Hamilton failed to come out of the McLaren garage for the second section of qualifying.
The Ferrari duo of Felipe Massa (7th) and Kimi Raikkonen (9th) finished well down in the final knockout stage.
