Former India pacer Abey Kuruvilla has emerged the front-runner to represent West Zone in the Board of Control for Cricket in India&rsquo;s (BCCI) senior selection panel. The spot was vacated by Surendra Bhave, who was part of the last selection committee headed by Krishnamachari Srikkanth which ended its four-year term recently. <img alt="Abey Kuruvilla" src="http://images.mid-day.com/2012/sep/Abey.jpg" style="width: 500px; height: 332px; " /> Abey Kuruvilla Kuruvilla on Monday replaced Milind Rege as the chairman of selectors for Mumbai&rsquo;s senior teams. The Nari Contractor-led Cricket Improvement Committee picked Kuruvilla for the top post, while Rege continues to remain one of the selectors. There are various factors that go in favour of the well-built Kuruvilla, who played 10 Tests and 25 ODIs for India. He was chairman of selectors of the U-19 Indian team that won the World Cup in Australia last month. Kuruvilla has also done a commendable job as chairman of the junior selection panel that picked the U-19 Cooch Behar Trophy-winning Mumbai side last season. It was Mumbai&rsquo;s only title last year. Kuruvilla is also probably the only selector, who continues to play the game and is often spotted at matches across Mumbai&rsquo;s maidans slugging out with budding cricketers. It&rsquo;s no wonder then that the MCA has decided to throw its weight behind Kuruvilla, who retired from competitive cricket in 2000. &ldquo;We (MCA) will try our best to pitch for Abey Kuruvilla as the West Zone representative in the BCCI selection panel. He has done an excellent job over the years. His record has been extraordinary as well. As far as the MCA is concerned, Abey is the most suitable West Zone representative.
